We underestimate energy. The appraisal profession has plenty of intelligence. Plenty of rules. What it sometimes lacks is a spark.
Recently I was in Philadelphia at the ProSight CRE Appraisal Managers Forum. We talked about too much work, hiring challenges, tighter timelines, more scrutiny, more pressure. These are not people looking for something else to do. Their plates are already full.
Then I went to see the Rocky statue. And something funny happened.
People would look up and see the statue at the top of the stairs and just impulsively start running. Kids. Adults. Tourists. Even a group of Marine ROTC members. Nobody organized it. Nobody blew a whistle. Nobody said, “Okay everyone, sprint.”
They just did it.
A nearly 50-year-old movie had somehow convinced random groups of people to run up steps. Because the idea of Rocky gave them energy. That’s enthusiasm.
Enthusiasm is the impulse to give a little more energy to something that matters. For fee appraisers, it might be then making the effort to improve the quality and consistency of their reports with productivity in mind. The chief appraiser enthusiasm might be trying to create the best department at their bank.
AI might be just like “Apollo Creed” being our biggest challenger. It’s a formidable opponent due to its challenges and opportunities. The biggest challenge, not just in the valuation space, is that DIY AI is leaving many employees overworked and less productive.
“Ivan Drago” might be the chief appraiser’s boss saying, “Go use some AI stuff and I want you to be 30% more efficient.” The DIY AI can be very frustrating experimenting with random tools, rewriting prompts and adding another layer of work to an already overloaded day. The answer isn’t to run harder in every direction. It’s to keep putting in the right reps.
Rocky was never the best boxer in the room. That was the point. But he had the biggest heart of a champion to keep fighting. Maybe enthusiasm is nothing more complicated than that: deciding there’s still another round worth showing up for.
